Africa Calling!

Ann-Sofie Sydow, Education coordinator at The Game Assembly along with a delegation of other local representatives from the Swedish Games Industry and supported by the Swedish Institute have recently returned from a knowledge sharing trip to Angola and South Africa.

When I came to these two countries it was my first time to the continent ever. I had no idea what to expect. But one thing is for sure, there are gamers and game developers down there. I asked students in Angola if they played Candy Crush and the majority in the auditorium did. Some of them couldn’t wait until Massive Entertainment’s The Division will get released, Ann-Sofie said.

Local developers on the trip included Johan Oldbring (Ubisoft Massive), Klaus Lyngeled (Zoink games), Linus Feldt (Filimundus) and Sten Selander (Dataspelsbranschen) who met with notable names from the South African game development scene along with gaming and technology media and representatives from The Innovation Hub, the Department of Trade and Industry, Resonance Group, Ster-Kinekor Entertainment, KPMG, City of Johannesburg, WITS University (Digital Arts), Microsoft (SA) Pty Ltd and Make Games SA.

This was an aid project funded by the Swedish Institute in cooperation with the Swedish Embassy. And yes there will be some kind of follow-up. How do I know not. Have not seen the report that the Institute has written yet, she added.

A full post on the trip which is littered with great pictures can be viewed on The Game Assembly.
